Over the past weekend, a brilliant British-Chinese teenager captured the attention of the entire internet—so much so that even the Queen of England was drawn into the spotlight. At just 18 years old, Emma Raducanu claimed victory in the US Open women’s singles final, becoming the first qualifier in history to win a Grand Slam title and, since Maria Sharapova’s Wimbledon triumph in 2004, the youngest female Grand Slam champion.

Emma defeated her fellow under-20 opponent, Leylah Fernandez, with scores of 6–4 and 6–3, becoming the first British woman to win a Grand Slam singles title in 44 years. The last British woman to claim this honor was Virginia Wade, who triumphed at Wimbledon in 1977.

Emma became the first qualifier in history to win a Grand Slam title, claiming the championship with a flawless performance that saw her drop not a single set.

Tennis legend Martina Navratilova said, “A new star has been born. Emma Raducanu has made history, and she’s only just getting started.”

Following Emma’s resounding victory at the U.S. Open in New York, the British Queen was the first to send her a congratulatory letter.
